Mel Steinberg, who passed away October 2010, was among the major world paper money dealers for more
than 30 years.
But more than that, he was a fountain of knowledge on the provenance and history of the notes that passed through his hands, and he was always willing to share that knowledge. He had an enthusiasm for paper money that he was able to pass on to literally hundreds of collectors who spent time at his table at any of the world’s major paper money shows. Mel was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935 and moved to Ohio in 1964 to become a tenured professor of mathematics at Antioch College. It was here that he began dealing first in coins, but almost immediately switched to paper money. In 1981, Mel moved to the San Francisco area where he built up his business to become one of the most recognizable figures at all the major paper money shows.
