Gary Snover is one of the true pioneers of world banknote collecting in the United States and a longtime pillar of the International Bank Note Society. He began a part-time banknote mail-order business in 1966 while still working as a cancer technician at the California State Hospital, and by 1978 had become a full-time dealer devoted to building great world banknote collections. More than half a century later, he remains active, bringing the same enthusiasm, warmth, and professionalism that have defined his career.
Gary was present in 1972, during a trip to visit Colin Narbeth in London and Albert Pick in Munich, when early IBNS members created the “Life Member” category. Colin Narbeth received Life Member #1, and Gary was honored as #10, reflecting his place among the organization’s earliest and most dedicated supporters.
His service to IBNS has been extensive, including work on the Board, the Awards Committee, and many of the volunteer efforts required to build a young organization. He also promoted IBNS tirelessly at shows, through literature, and by personal encouragement. Beyond IBNS, Gary spent three years as a banknote consultant to Stanley Gibbons and self-published the first comprehensive listing of world traveler’s checks. He later acquired Albert Pick’s traveler’s check collection, adding to his own important holdings.
Widely admired for his integrity, generosity, and knowledge, Gary has spent decades mentoring young numismatists, assisting new collectors, and supporting longtime colleagues. Friends and fellow dealers consistently praise his ethics, customer service, and willingness to help others. For many, Gary Snover represents the very best of the hobby: a trusted professional, an outstanding ambassador, and a gentleman in every sense.
