Carlton Frederick "Fred" Schwan of Port Clinton, Ohio, is widely regarded as the preeminent authority on military-related paper money and numismatics. Born and raised in Port Clinton, Fred earned a Master of Science degree from Bowling Green University in 1974 while serving on active duty in the U.S. Army (1969–1989)and retired at the rank of Major.
Fred's contributions to numismatics are extensive and far-reaching. In 1977, he founded BNR Press, a publishing house specializing in original paper money references, giving a platform to researchers whose works might otherwise never have seen print. Among his most celebrated publications is the co-authored *World War II Remembered* (1995, with Joseph Boling), considered an essential resource for collectors of WWII-era numismatica. He also co-authored *World War II Allied Military Currency* with Raymond Toy and has written numerous articles for publications including *Bank Note Reporter*, *Coin World*, *The Numismatist*, and the *IBNS Journal*.
A dedicated educator, Fred teaches Military Numismatics at the ANA Summer Seminars and has spoken at numerous conventions nationwide. He founded the annual MPCFest in Port Clinton, a beloved gathering of military currency collectors and researchers that consistently draws capacity attendance and serves as a venue for significant numismatic discoveries. The event even funds a scholarship for one attendee to the ANA Summer Seminars.
A Life Member of the IBNS, Fred has also served on its Board of Directors and as Vice President. He received the NLG Clemy Award in 2005 among many other honors.
