Michel Becuwe (2018)

Michel Becuwe was a distinguished collector and researcher of world paper money whose influence on the study of French colonial banknotes was profound. A dedicated numismatist for half a century, he built one of the most important banknote collections in the world, with the sections devoted to the former French colonies regarded as truly exceptional.

Many members of the International Bank Note Society and visitors to the Maastricht show in the 1990s will remember the annual exhibitions of rare banknotes, often drawn from Michel’s remarkable collection. Elegantly dressed in his trademark three-piece suit, he was a gracious and enthusiastic presence, clearly delighted to see others engage with the material he so carefully preserved and studied. His exhibits were not only visually impressive but also deeply educational, helping collectors understand signature varieties and other important aspects of French colonial issues.

Michel Becuwe’s contribution extended far beyond collecting. He was a major researcher whose expertise significantly informed the catalogues of French colonies published by Maurice Kolsky, Maurice Muszynski and others. His scholarship helped shape the reference literature in this field, and when portions of his collection were auctioned by CGB in Paris in the early 2000s, the resulting catalogues became standard references for collectors and researchers.

Remembered as a true gentleman, Michel was also generous with his knowledge, always willing to assist fellow collectors and especially encouraging to younger people entering the hobby.
